Tasmania is a small state, and in small communities, most tradies are careful about their reputation. But that doesn't mean every tradie is the right tradie for your job. Here's how to approach the hiring process properly.
Step 1: Check Their ABN
Any legitimate tradie should have an active Australian Business Number. You can verify any ABN for free at abn.business.gov.au. An ABN check takes 30 seconds and confirms the business is registered and active. If a tradie is reluctant to provide their ABN, that's a serious red flag.
Step 2: Check Their Licence (For Licensed Trades)
Plumbers, electricians, and gas fitters must be licensed in Tasmania. Builders doing domestic work over $20,000 must be registered as building practitioners. Verify licences at cbos.tas.gov.au before any work starts.
Step 3: Get a Written Quote
Always get your quote in writing before any work starts. A proper quote should include:
- A description of the work to be done
- The total price, including GST
- What's excluded (materials supplied by owner, specialist subcontractors, etc.)
- An estimated timeframe
- Payment terms
If a tradie refuses to provide a written quote, get someone else.
Step 4: Check References or Reviews
In Tasmania, asking around works well. If a tradie has done work in your area, chances are someone you know has seen or heard about it. Online reviews on Google Business Profile are also a useful signal — not perfect, but better than nothing.
Red Flags to Watch For
- No ABN or unwillingness to provide one
- Quote given verbally only, with no written follow-up
- Asking for large upfront cash payments
- Unable to give a realistic timeframe
- Pressure to start immediately without a proper quote
- No public liability insurance
Protecting Yourself If Things Go Wrong
For major work, consider using a contract. Consumer, Building and Occupational Services Tasmania (CBOS) provides guidance on residential building contracts and your rights as a homeowner. If you have a dispute with a tradie, Consumer Affairs Tasmania can assist.
💡 All tradies listed on Find A Tradie Tas are ABN verified before listing. For licensed trades, we verify licence numbers too. It's our minimum standard — not the only thing you should check, but a solid starting point.
